More Oxford Drama in Next Year’s Contra

Those clean-cut hipster kids from Vampire Weekend are getting ready to drop their sophomore effort “Contra” in January of 2010. Lace up yer moccasins.

Download the first cut from the album here. Personally, it leaves a little to be desired. I dig all the intelligent percussion, but I hope this album is not going to be another musical complexity like their debut. It was inspiring then, because it was fresh and polished for a first LP, but I don’t want to hear the same sounds again a year later.

According to a recent Pitchfork article and interview with lead singer Ezra Koenig, “Contra” is not a “retread,” but

There are change-ups– two straight-up ballads, a warped reggae track, a sprinkling of AutoTune– but the overall vibe remains enthusiastic and unafraid.
